Can I use silicone sealant instead of a gasket? | MCN

Q. I have bought a second hand slip-on exhaust for my 2009 Suzuki GSXR750. The pipe that connects to the end pipe is slightly out of shape and the gasket does not fit in correctly.

When trying to fit the exhaust the gasket gets pushed too far down the inside and does not sit correctly.

Would it be possible to use a silicone sealant instead of the gasket? I have seen a sealant in Halfords that is heat resistant. Would this be ok?

A. That would be OK, you can also use instant gasket that is high temperature silicone at a push. Even normal bathroom silicone sealant is temperature resistant to about 250 degrees C.

If the gap is too big between the pipe and slip-on can, try packing it with kitchen foil as well.
